Nope, the explosion of jellyfish is because of a shift in the warm water currents. It was on prime-time national news a few weeks ago. Most of the Japanese net fishers are reporting a %60-%90 decrease in "usable" catch because the jelly fish are clogging their nets. A side-effect I I never thought about is the major damage the jellyfish cause the nets and even cause the currents to tear the nets loose of the anchors and they drift out to the ocean deeps. I guess it's a because the nets become like a parachute such that the water can't easily flow through.
Japan is trying to get international approval to rate this as a natural disaster and allow them to fish beyond their current limits till the jellyfish move on. Supposedly the shortage of fish is also causing a massive price increase at the markets.
