carajas has it right.........
spoilers below
the writer completed the story arcs of the characters themselves.........the sour taste left in my mouth lies in the unexplained. The island, all their experiences, and all the supernatural events WERE real. It is those things I just mentioned that go unexplained, and can continue to be debated and talked about.
Island = real
Side flashes = a realm where they all had to wait for eachother to realize they were dead, meet up, and then move on together since the time they spent on the island was the most important parts of their collective lives.

To quote Jimmy Kimmel during :JKL: Aloha to LOST" "I'm so proud of myself right now, you have no idea"
Just watch JKL, and I agreed with Jimmy when he says that during LA X, pt. 1 (S06E01) when Jack is gripping the armrest during the turbulence.. that's the moment he just died in the island and came back to the flash sideways (without knowing he was ever in the island)
I have heard a lot of people give the whole "everything that happened on the island was real and the sideways was after they died" take. I get it ...it allows for the sci-fi, supernatural, unknown. But I call bullshit.
No one ages, richard is there since the 1800's. No preggos. People w/cancer are cured. Cripples walk. Fat guys on the hunter gatherer diet never loose weight. They are already dead on the island. Everyone on the island died and that is how they end up there. Shipwreck, plane crash, whatever. The series starts w/ jack opening his eyes after the crash on the island, on his back, in the bamboo field, ...and it ends with him on the island, dying on his back, in the bamboo field. Everything in between was in his head or in the afterlife. The credits role. Then they show you the wreckage. They don't show you fire pits, shelters, shit gathered, neatly arranged and then left behind, or footprints in the sand. You don't see any pyramids, giant 4 toed statues, darma colonies, or rivers of light. No. All you see is the site of a recent plane crash.
They said it was a show about the characters and it was. They said everything would be answered and it was. The characters died. They couldn't move on until they each resolved their unfinished business. Their souls were... wait for it... LOST. Then Jack made peace w/ his dad, kate got to be a mom, Sawyer let down his tuf guy con man guard and became a team player, hurley stopped being the shy fat guy and found love, whatever...
It sucks for the people who got all hard for a sci-fi supernatural island with a timeless 1000 year global conspiracy, supernatural good and evil gods, a time travel wheel, and on and on. Those tools got kicked in the teeth. They got none of that. A gay dream sequence, that they stretched out for 6-years.
