This reminds me of something. Earlier this week one of our jets hit a goose right after takeoff. Fucking thing knocked a huge hole in the leading edge of the wing. Gotta be 1-2ft in diameter. Jet had to fly around for another 5 hours with a huge hole in the wing to burn off enough fuel to land. haha

It's just standard. Less fuel means lighter landing load. If the jet is lighter it's easier to control. If you have a landing gear problem, you want it as light as you can get it before touching down. But it applies to pretty much any IFE (In-Flight Emergency), with the exception of probably a passenger having a medical emergency.
And yeah, less fuel, less chance of a huge fireball if something does go wrong.
Plus, I'm not 100% on this, but let's say you have a jet fully fueled. While the landing gear can support that up to takeoff, it may not be strong enough to support that weight when landing.
