Virlomi was born in India during the post-buggers war. She was one of the very few female Battle School Grads and spent a lot time looking for other female Battle Schoolers while she was there. She seems to be, if not shy, reserved. She kept to herself and mostly stayed under the radar, both due to her personality and because she wasn't as brilliant as the other children -she was above average, but average among the extraordinaire.
Later, when the children from Battle School return to Earth and some are captured by the infamous Achilles de Flandres, she is the one Petra Arkanian contacted, because she was a girl, seemed reachable or was the first one to pick up his hidden message is not clear, though it might have been a combination of Virlomi being more approachable and her picking up the code.
After Petra's escape, Virlomi took off on her own. Her destionation was unknown and, apparently, Achilles wasn't very concerned about it since there was no fuss on his part or search party (and also there were more pressing matters for him). She went back to India and started to reflect on some things that convinced her that she could do something to help her people against the Chinese invasion (backed by Achilles). With small comments and actions she manipulated a villa into believing there was a Great Wall of India being made in other villages -which was a lie since she came up with the idea when observing a child's work). Surprisingly, people backed her up saying it was true, they had heard of it too. Therefore, the Great Wall of India was created and soon became as much of a pride and symbol of the people of India as a bother for the Chinese invasors, who tried to destroy it and ban it unsuccessfully.
Along her journeys across India, she also managed to become some kind of goddess among the people, who went to her for advice and loved her. She acted benevolent and divine, watching her every move and word, behaving like a goddess so well she started to believe -later- she was really a chosen one.
In the meantime, before she started to believe her own act, Suriyawong "rescued" her. At the time of her rescue, they had a non-verbal understanding on how he should behave and what he should do so she wouldn't lose face as a divine persona. Also, we realize Suriyawong is attracted and -later- in love with her.
During the war, she enforced her divine power over the people by being humble and poor, living a seemingly spiritual life and doing everything in favor of India. She was there to help "Mother India". She was India.
When, at a point, Han Tzu -commonly known as Hot Soup, former Battle School student, member of Ender's Jeesh and younger than her- asked her to marry, she refused, saying she wouldn't marry the one who defiled India, referring to the previous Chinese invasion and later atrociousness or restrictions committed against her people. Afterwards, she turned and went to the Hegemon, Peter Wiggin, offering herself and India as a strong ally. He refused her. Out of bitterness, indignation and desire to prove him he had made the wrong decision, she offered herself to Caliph Alai, who couldn't resist her as a woman and accepted her marriage proposal and implicit alliance between nations.
Later, Virlomi tried several dangerous attacks on China and the Free People of Earth (FPE) and Alai ended up separating himself from her, not only because of her carelessness and consideration to their armies but also due to the attempts to his own life -not proved to be her fault directly, but from a group of muslims who saw him as an outsider. Suriyawong, who was in love with her, convinced her that she had gone insane at some point, during a disgracefull and bloody battle that resulted from her reckless plan based on her divinity. Virlomi, suddenly realizing everything she had done, called a stop to war and decided to step back from her desire to "expand" India, which had only resulted on unnecessary death and battles so far.
As the war ended and Battle School grads were send off to colonies as a way to keep them from becoming potential world dominators, Virlomi was send as the head of the colony of Ganges, predominantly hindu. While living there, she not only skipped some years of Earth life due to faster-than-light travel, she'd also meet with Ender and his sister Valentine. During his visit, she warned him of the captain of his ship trying to take control of his own colony as soon as they arrived, something Ender knew or suspected already. However, the gesture was appreciated and Ender thinks or convinces himself Virlomi was a coherent and reasonable person again. She then married Suriyawong. Presumably, she lived the rest of her life peacefully.
