I'm all for two great fighters going at it, but Alves and Florian being left in the dark is kind of a bummer. Maybe Alves can rematch Fitch and Florian vs. Sherk II can happen, but if BJ wins the WW title it could end up with really long layoffs between title defenses in two of the better UFC weight classes.

yea i saw this, as much as i hate what penn does during tune ups to the fights and stuff and how cocky he is i think the fight will not be easy. but that is stating the obvious. i dont even know who to guess as to winning this fight. penn has so many things that are hard to defend against and there is no one that can do what penn does that gsp could train with. either super fight would be great in my books

That is the last thing I want to see. BJ belongs at LW. They can market a 3rd fight if BJ wins this one as a rubber match, but I don't really give a shit to see BJ fight Fitch or Kos. Then again, the only LW fight I really care to see right now is BJ vs. Florian.
I'm not bitching about the super fight really. It just annoys me with how long it took to get done. BJ hasn't fought since May. I want to see belts on the line every 3-4 months. Not every 6-8 or even more. That's why TUF pisses me off when a champ is a coach. It just puts everything in limbo.

i agree about the TUF when belts are on the line it takes for ever to get things going. this one for the HW belt has seemed to drag, but it was a good think that Randy came back even if he lost so there was a title fight. with the weight classes there should be not prob having a title fight on ever 2 months, even if the belt holder fights only 3 times a year. i hate to say it but when there is no title or major hyped fight i feel like i shouldnt have to pay to watch, and for some it has worked out that they arent ppv like the bisping/leben fight.

Theoretically they should be able to have a title fight every PPV. There are 5 weight classes and there are about 12 PPVs per year. 2 Champs fight three times a year. 3 Champs only have to fight twice a year. The only problem I see with it is that they don't have enough time for contenders to emerge and build them up. There is also a higher risk of the champs losing quickly so there is less time to build them up too. If the champ does manage to defend his belt several times you end up with a situation like Anderson Silva who has pretty much cleaned the division out and has to take fights that aren't against top guys.
how the hard up for a fight must you be to go from afflicion fight with the best fighter in the world to trying to get a fight with a guy that has lost a bunch of his last fights (8 out of 10 or something) and having that turned down by a no name promotion.

Update: Sylvia Aims at Japan, Ken Shamrock

After losing to Fedor Emelianenko last July, Tim Sylvia plans for a big return.
The former UFC heavyweight champion is prepared to fight in Japan in roughly 30 days. Sylvia’s manager, Monte Cox, is actively seeking a fight for “The Maine-iac” on K-1 and Dream’s co-promoted “Premium 2008 Dynamite” card on Dec. 31 or World Victory Road’s Sengoku event on Jan. 4. Cox said Sylvia has been granted a certificate of eligibility to participate in either promotion.
“I don’t think anyone ever knows until about a week before they fight,” said Sylvia of preparing for an opponent in one of the Japanese organizations.
Sylvia (24-5) hoped to return to Affliction in January, but Cox confirmed that the 6-foot-8 heavyweight will sit out the novice promotion’s second show set for Jan. 24 in Anaheim, Calif., which features an Emelianenko-Andrei Arlovski clash.
Sylvia, who also has a contract with Cox’s Adrenaline MMA promotion, has been eyeing a meeting with UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock (26-13-2).
“I was supposed to fight Ken Shamrock December 20, but it’s been postponed to February now,” said Sylvia. “He’s a free agent. I was supposed to fight him in a small show called XP3 Promotions. I believe in Texas, but it’s postponed to February now.”
Cox echoed Sylvia’s position that a bout with the 44-year-old Shamrock was in the works.
However, Melissa Ingram, director of media relations for Ken Shamrock Entertainment Inc., was hesitant to describe the fight as being in “preliminary negotiations.”
Shamrock’s manager Ron Donohoo told Sherdog.com on Monday that the bout was not under consideration.
“Our organization was approached some time ago about the prospect of Ken fighting Sylvia, but it was rejected,” Donohoo wrote in an email.
Donohoo did not disclose the reason the fight was declined. XP3 Promotions told Sherdog.com via email that it has written confirmation from both parties that they are currently in negotiations for the bout. XP3 plans to hold the event on Feb. 7 at the Reliant Arena in Houston.
Despite the opposing sides, Sylvia expects to see much action in the coming months, including a fight with Shamrock.
“I love to fight and a fight’s a fight,” said Sylvia. “He’s a Hall of Famer. He’s a legend. To progress your career you always have to fight somebody like that.
“I don’t know if he’s a stepping stone or anything, but he’s been on some of the same cards I’ve been on and he’s been highlighted over me, so I want to let people that I am better than this guy and there’s no reason he should have been highlighted over me.”
