Yeah, that is pretty gay looking. I like to stand with my toes on the edge of a step or fireplace and raise and lower, it's great to stretch out the achilles too. Of course, my calves are nothing like those dudes....

When you do them standing straight up, you hit a different muscle than when you are seated or bent at the waist. So it is good to do seated and standing calf raises to get the whole muscle group.
