fuck that. i would never have joined the military. don't get me wrong, i grew up in a military family and support the troops. but like ghandi said, "I am prepared to die, but there is no cause for which I am prepared to kill."

I agree with what you are saying, and I don't like the idea of forcing anyone to do anything (death and taxes in my opinion should be the limit, but more government seems to be the future lately). It's not realistic, and the nations left that do have conscripted forces mostly seem pretty backward. But I think it would be ideal in a perfect world for the people who don't join the military to have to like teach or substitute teach or drive schoolbuses or deliver mail or pick up trash or something.

i enjoyed that military vs education powwow. anyone who served will tell you "this made me a better person" just like anyone who graduated "this will make me a productive member of society"
