That can also be said of military recruits. My cousin (brother) has already gotten the highest promotion as a Sargent within the Army and while he was training his guys (diesel mechanics and welders) of i think about 24, he lost half due to drinking, drugs, going awol and a couple of suicides.
Pred you're all about the personal responsibility right? So do you think the military makes you better or is it about the individual? I feel its the individual, a truly successful person can't be stopped. I get what you say about the coddling, but I think its about the culture we've developed not about education/military service.

I agree with mandatory Military or Government Service (Spain makes everyone serve 2 years I believe). I wouldn't give back my 3 years in the Corps for anything, although cool humid days like today I wish my hip didn't grind and hurt so damned much, but it was all worth it.

Work ethic and respect for others is taught at home. Uncle Sam and Gunny Carter shouldn't be expected to undo in 9 weeks what 18 years of parental responsibility and neglect produced.

Good question and trust me, I am not trying to start a pissing contest about this either.
I do think that it's a marriage of the person and the training environment together. One without the other results in failure for the individual and the unit. Military service brings the best our of it's members as well as a deeper appreceiation (typo but it stays) for human life since you are trained how to take it away.

Neither am I man, most of my family has done military service while a couple of them have retired after fully serving.
What I am saying is, it sounds like you're saying the military is the ultimate learning tool. But some people drop out of the military for whatever reason. The same is more true, more people drop out of college than in the military. I sincerely don't believe that one is better than the other, I've talked to too many ex-service (wo) men that say its the same shit just a different pile.
I don't agree with the mandatory service for the same reason I wouldn't agree with mandatory college- some people just aren't cut out for it.

I'm not in favor of mandatory military service, but I am in favor of mandatory civil service of some kind to the government, I think perhaps between high school and college. I think it would be a good chance for people to figure out what they want to do with their life while providing the government a low-cost labor force to get some things done (parks service, etc.). I know of many countries in other parts of the world that do that. A friend of mine was born off-base in Spain and when he turned 20 or 21 he had to either give up his Spanish citizenship or go serve (I think it was 2 years).

I can kind of agree with this except for the reality, all the business that actually do that work will lose the business plus what of low income families where all the members contribute into the home income? Or single mothers for that matter? To force someone to do something, much less the government, makes it so that the government is responsible for the outcome. I don't want the government making anyone do anything, (and yes pred in concept we agree on other topics ), unless it is absolutely necessary. There is no shortage of labor in this country, plus there are already vocational programs for after high school students- you get paid minimum wage and work at parks (atleast in texas there is)
