I've been trying to get a video and web production company going with some friends of mine but it's just not happening, but it's something I'd like to ultimately do in the long run. I know a lot about web design, but almost virtually nothing about graphic design. I still use Paint Shop Pro 4.0 to make my graphics... that came out in 1996. Fact is, I only make text graphics, and I'm tired of it. I know I could learn photoshop on my own, but I don't have the willpower or motivation.
Also, the graphic desaign course will focus on design for advertising and business related products, which is what I want. They also do a web design course which, much like photoshop, I really don't know a whole lot about. I can make a site look nice and all, but I'm basically a template modifier, and I don't want to be that guy, I want to build my own bad ass websites.
Also, graphic design plays a HUGE role in tv/film. Title sequences, special effects, animation, movie posters, etc. It will give me an extreme well rounded education for video/web production. I wanna be the mack daddy of it all.
Also it's a lot easier to catch on at a local advertising/web production firm than it is a video production house... mainly because there's only like 2 video production places here and they're all full up. I'm not gonna get the experience I need in video/tv on my own and I'm not qualified enough for a job with a production house. The GM job will fix that 3 of the last 5 GM's have done the following:
1) Video editor for Comcast local access channel. Cool job, but he recently got laid off. He's also my filmmaking partner.
2) A post production editor in L.A. for shows like Top Chef. I actrually made a a few short films with him as well.
3) A somethinorother job (not sure what) for the Colbert Report in NY... also made some short comedy skits with him.
The job looks good on a resume, but I want to make my own business. I have several friends already in the art major at my campus and they tell me I'd probably be ridiculously good at graphic design because of my web background.
Oh yeah, I'm also considering minoring in IT, focusing on web design and development. Basically I want to be able to do anything and everything in terms of multimedia production, and I simply don't have the patience or time to do it on my own, so I want to essentially make it my job by going back to school and learning it.
Oh, also I'm required a secondary track to my major of graphic design and I'm choosing photography. That way I'll be able to do a fuck ton more. I'll be well versed in video production, graphic design for advertising, web design and development, and photography. I'll be a one man wrecking crew of awesome.
That and learning photography might entice me to start a glamour model website akin to Cosmid/Cover Models... because those sites make fucking bank and I too want to make bank. I'm not above starting a "porn" site... if you call glamour model photos porn. Either way, people jack it to that shit, and they'll divvy out the dough for it

Wow... that's hefty. Sounds like you're really passionate about it which is awesome!
One thing i wanna say is this and i dont wanna come off as too preachy or a know it all. I have seen my friends (and experienced it to some degree myself) go through something i like to call the "pro student" syndrome. It's basically where someone is always trying to learn and never stops trying to learn but then gets caught up in a hamster wheel of "oh now i need to learn this... and now i need to learn this". At some point you just have to trust that you know enough... that what you don't know, you can learn quickly and you just gotta trust yourself. I dont think you'll get stuck like that but i've seen it happen so be careful. BTW, it's also a form of procrastination as well. Ppl delay "going for it" because they want to learn "one more thing" or get better at "one more program". /rant
Back to the main topic.
Well, i can say from my experience that i think what might happen is that you will start out wanting to do everything then you'll find one aspect of it all that you really really love and start focusing on that a bit more... then you'll become uber god of it. Specializing is the way to go, imo. You cant get past a certain point in your skill set when you try to keep up with all the programs and skills. You end up spreading yourself too thin.
Then on top of keeping up with your stable of ever changing programs... you also have to keep up with advertising trends, design trends, and not only keep up but learn to innovate. The keeping up part only matters if you get heavily into working with ad agencies... if you stay on the TV side of it you'll wont need to be so on top of the "trends."
Ad agencies suck....i could go on forever complaining about editing sessions with douchebags ad execs. I fucking hate them but i really enjoy adverts.
Maybe we should start a production / post / animation thread? I know Troup is really into it too... there might be others. Just a thought.
I'll stop now bcuz i am really tired. Feel free to ask any questions bcuz i have 15+ years in this field man. I feel like i have done it all at one point or another. I have 2 emmy nominations for editing as well. They are regional emmy noms but i have won a lot of other awards as well. (i never submit my work to award shows but my clients do).
Oh, and i can DEFF give you advice on finding/dealing with clients if you are going that route.
Cheers man
EDIT - i should add that i know the phrase "design trends" sucks ass because good design is good design and i agree with that but when it comes to dealing with ad agencies... they want what is new and cool just like Hollywood. Take for example when the movie Waking Life came out. The program that was used to "paint" that film was finally finished and all the agencies came out with commercials using that style since it was the newest, coolest thing. That's what i mean by "trends".

That's funny shit dude.
Woke up this morning again at 5am, pissed, and went back to sleep until 6am. I guess at least I'm showing up on time to work instead of 10 minutes late like I had been doing. It's bizarre to come home to an empty house still, but I kind of like it. No one says shit to me about walking around naked or flogging my pony while looking at internet porn or squelched IDT.com videos. No one decides what I'm going to eat or when. No one makes me do their work so they can get the glory. Yeah, I'm a happy man so far with the single life.
