since you guys are on a military kick lest me ask you: what are your thoughts on people who go awol. the reason i ask is b/c a girl i work with has a brother who is awol. to hear him tell it he got in a fight with an officer and just left. he's been hanging around for months. it makes me wonder if they're even looking for him.

My understanding from an old SP friend of mine is that they don't really look. After 30 days they separate you from the military rolls (pay, bene's etc.) and they flag your SS number. It's a lot like having a bench warrant for your arrest. Chances are no one is going to beat down the door in the middle of the night with a squad of ninjas looking for your coworkers brother. However, if he tries to clear customs, apply for just about any loan etc. he's SOL.

They used to toss you in Leavenworth or the like for a year, and hell, under the Uniform Code of Military Justice you can be shot for desertion in a time of war. But chances are he'd either do some time and get a dishonorable, or fill out a shit ton of paper and get a medical discharge for being fucked in the head.
