White Trash

I know it's an often used phrase. But does anyone else believe it's racist?

Maybe I'm getting PC in my old age but saying someone is white trash points out the fact that they are white, as if it needed to be pointed out. How fucked up is that! I'd bet dollars to donuts that phrase comes from the old south.

As a mexican that uses the word wetback atleast once a day in a joke, I could care less if its insulting to some.

The interesting thing to me is that the only time I ever hear white trash is from white people. I'm guessing racial harmony is finally taking hold, or I'm constantly drunk.

it's not racist...at least I don't think so...trust me, there is a big difference between being white-redneck, and being white trash...BIG difference....I take my camera to my son's football games, you want pics of real white trash, I'll snap a pic of the entire bleachers and I'm sure you can pick them out on your own....those people make me embarrassed to say I live in KY....

okay but isn't TRASH, trash? pointing out that the trashy person is white infers something.

I am making a conscious effort not to use that phrase anymore. Just like I made a conscious effort when I was younger not to say the things the adults around me said (grew up in the rockies) when I found out those words were hurtful. Now I know people aren't running around being offended by the phrase "white trash" but I think it's because they don't remember or never considered its origins or implications.

i agree. redneck and white trash are different in my mind. i got both in my family.

the rednecks in my family are farmers/laborers...spend a lot of time working in the sun, hence the red neck.

the trash in my family spend a lot of time doing nothing. lower on the food chain in my opinion.

Personally, I only hear the term from white people. And living here, I hear it less than I did in Indiana. I don't find it offensive. But then again, I think we as a society give too much power to terms that each race sometimes uses on other members of the same race...but are highly offensive if you use it on a different race. I may not be explaining myself too well right now.

Shatsa, I fully understand the video/ashamed to say you are from KY thing. I've had that happen myself back home. I seldom admit the actual town just because of the reputation.

maybe it's a subtlety, and maybe it depends on where you say it?

Here's an example. I don't mean to be insensitive but since you have told us you're of Asian decent and since you said you had white trash in your family let's work thru this theory:


You and I are in a restaurant in say Chinatown in San Francisco. We have a great meal, drinks, a blast. We are sitting with a bunch of your elders. Maybe they are first generation here in the states and have lived thru some of the shitty times, oh like the internment camps and all the nasty anti-asian press back in the day.

Some skank with half her ass crack showing, stripper heels and dirty hair smoking a cigarette in a restaurant and and her floppy tits are half hanging out of her shirt walk in. Her toothless crack addicted baby daddy walks right behind smacking her ass, being loud and obnoxious and starts being a dick to the waitress. Your elders start to get uncomfortable and embarrassed that anyone would act this way (I have the place in mind I just can't remember the name, it's a kick ass restaurant you have to take an elevator up to like the 25th floor - very expensive, amazing food).
Anyway, as younger people, you and I start to feel embarrassed for the older people in the room. Especially when the losers start using lots of profanity and he starts feeling her up at the table.

A few minutes later your elders excuse themselves, and get ready to leave. As you and I are paying the tab your elders hear me call those baffoons White Trash. You translate for them because it's slang. How do you explain it and how does grandpa feel about what I said?

for me its a derogatory term meaning one who is uneducated & just above the poverty line....just my opinion
