Japanese Man Dies After His 6-Ton Porn Magazines Collection Collapsed on Top of Him

A Japanese man was recently found dead in his apartment and his death was tragic. However, the cause may not necessarily be considered “normal.” Apparently, the man was killed when a stack of porn magazines fell on him.
The 50-year-old Japanese man — who was identified only as a former car-maker named “Joji” — was described as an isolated individual. His neighbors said that he mostly kept to himself. Nobody had a clue that he had managed to stack six tons worth of porn magazines inside his apartment. So that’s 13,228 pounds of adult reading materials!
In his Mail Online report, Gareth Davies noted,
“It was unclear if Joji had suffered a heart attack and fallen into the stacks of magazines which had then fallen on top of him, or whether he had been crushed by the mass of paper.”
Indeed, even if Joji had been alive when the magazines fell on him, he would eventually have suffocated.
What’s even more tragic is the fact that Joji’s death was only discovered six months after his death. The landlord had been wondering why he was no longer paying rent. So he opened Joji’s apartment.
You can just imagine the landlord’s shock when he saw that Joji’ apartment was filled with pornographic magazines. They were stacked all over the space.
Joji’s family later hired a cleaning company to remove his rather embarrassing collection. The cleaners were instructed to be discreet so that Joji’s family will be saved from shame. Unfortunately, though, some details about Joji’s death have made it to the news. Still, his family can just take comfort in the fact that his name hasn’t entirely been revealed.
Joji was most probably afflicted with a compulsive hoarding disorder. The Mayo Clinic defines the disorder as a mental health issue wherein the hoarder experiences “a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them.”
The Mayo Clinic added,
“Hoarding ranges from mild to severe. In some cases, hoarding may not have much impact on your life, while in other cases it seriously affects your functioning on a daily basis.”
Clearly, Joji’s hoarding problem had gone beyond “severe.”
Bottom line: Too much of anything can kill you.
Always remember that when the things you love to collect begin to be the center of your universe, it’s time to seek professional help.

Spurious articles reported that a man was crushed by a pile of pornography; he actually died of a heart attack.

On 4 March 2017, several dubious news outlets reported that a Japanese man was killed when a six-ton pile of porn he had amassed in his apartment fell and crushed him.
While it is true that a Japanese man died in his apartment amidst tons of pornography, the Japanese news website Nikkan Spa!, originally reported that he actually died of a heart attack. Further, despite reports that the man was not found for six months after his death, the Nikkan-Spa! simply reported that the unidentified man’s body was found a month later.
Gruesomely, the story notes that the pornography soaked up his “body fluids,” which would normally cause an odor and alert neighbors of his death. “Although it is nightmare talk, this is reality,” the article says.
The phenomenon of solitary deaths, or kodokushi, has been a concern in Japan since at least 2005:
According to the Japan Quality of Life Survey, conducted in 2013 by the Japanese government’s Economic and Social Research Institute, 32% of respondents reported that they were somewhat or very concerned about dying alone. According to our own analysis of the data, the worries are negatively correlated with subjective well-being. Worries about solitary death show one of the highest negative correlations with happiness.
Japanese national broadcasting company NHK tied the phenomenon to a society without bonds, where people have lost their connection to family, neighbors, and colleagues.
