Formally it's a more dramatic distinction - yoga pants aren't tight. They are loose and airy and have a draw-string at the waist and do NOT cling. Lots of girls wear leggings to yoga but it's not good for the form - it holds you in where you should be doing it with your muscles, and it doesn't allow you to breathe and relax at the times that's called for.
