LaCie Joins the NAS Party with Network Space MAX
May 20, 2010

Just like their Stark collaboration and Internet Space storage units, LaCie delivers once again with their latest Network Space MAX - yet another stunning piece of design that merges aesthetics with function. And for that, we'll happily use it for both storage and display on our bookshelves, doubling as the fanciest bookend ever.

Now, onward with the details. If you don't know what a NAS is, it's basically a solution that allows for multiple computers at home to hook up into a single hard drive unit that houses everyone's data. If you're familiar with USB hard drives, NAS drives function just the same, except you plug it into the router directly via Ethernet instead of to your computer.

With of the amount of data sent around today, the Network Space MAX comes reasonably equipped with either 2TB or 4TB sizes, which should satisfy even the most aggressive downloader for months to come. If you're particularly paranoid, you can also run the two internal drives in RAID (or mirrored-mode), sacrificing half your capacity, but allowing for the second drive to use as real-time backup.

With gigabit Ethernet, a USB option if you still want to use it as a regular external, and Time Machine functionality, you can bet LaCie plans to make their little Network Space station your one-stop solution for getting your data shared around your local home network.

You can purchase the Network Space MAX for $280 (2TB) and $480 (4TB). Available now online and your local electronic store.

Solio: Portable Solar Universal Chargers
May 20, 2010 11:30AM

Classic Charger

These smart chargers contain tiny solar cells that convert sunlight into power for your iPhone, BlackBerry, or any of the 3200-plus devices that Solio says their chargers are compatible with. The charger connects to your device via USB port or using an optional wall charger. Just leave the solar cells open to the sun and they'll go to work?Solio provides tips on how to get the most energy out of your charger.

The chargers contain an internal Lithium-Ion battery and, depending on the model, they have an output range of 5-6V. Solar charge times (meaning how long it takes to soak up enough sun to reach full power) range from 9-17 hours?the Mono takes the longest and the Classic is the fastest. If it's plugged into an outlet, charge times condense to 2-4 hours. For comparison specs between the different Solio models, click here.

Solio chargers are sold online through their website or through retailers like the Apple Store and Amazon.

Sound ID 510 Bluetooth Headset

I?m only slightly ashamed to admit that I use a Bluetooth headset around the house/office, a tiny model from BlueAnt. But while its compact size makes it easy to wear, it also limits the number of buttons on it, making changing settings or adjusting the noise cancellation a ridiculous series of timed button presses that I never bothered to learn. So I have to say I?m quite surprised that the Sound ID 510 Bluetooth headset is actually the first to come with its own iPhone app, EarPrint, that makes changing settings, adjusting the volume or EQ of the sound and monitoring the battery life ridiculously easy.

The app is of course free on the App Store, but only works with the Sound ID 510 BT headset, which itself is no slouch. Its noise cancellation uses 3 separate mics to eliminate wind and other noises, it can be connected to 2 phones at the same time, has 5 hours of talk time with 135 hours of standby and the outer surface is a touch sensitive strip allowing you to adjust the volume (when your iPhone is inaccessible) by just sliding your finger across it.

LiteOn's Mobile Lamp

As with most LED light bulbs, the "mobile lamp" is compatible with traditional incandescent light bulb sockets, but what sets it apart from similar products is its internal battery, which can keep the light powered for up to two hours in the case of a power failure. The bulb can also be turned on and off when running on battery by gently tapping its base. It will be priced in the $50 range. Kind of expensive at first, but considering that the device's lifetime is around 30 years and that all it consumes is 7w of power, it's probably worth the investment.

I can just see it now, the ER gets it's first smart bulb, having to take it out of some faggot's ass, because his partner shoved it up there to light the way and then couldn't get it out.
