Okay, I've got a new one to bump the thread that I just figured out about myself last week.

I can't bring myself to kill a rabbit. A pet rabbit, you ask? No, a regular fucking garden pest. This is fucking embarrasing. Here's the whole story:

My grandfather and mentor taught me to love shooting, hunting and fishing. Back when I lived with them as a kid (mom was abusive and dad thought that D&D was more important than anything else) my grandma had to work late one night, so my grandpa handed me a scoped .22 caliber rifle and a box of fifty rounds and said, quote, "Get dinner." I was nine at the time. Long story short I brought back enough ducks and squirrels to last about three days, and my grandpa was beaming. From then on, the guns and the game just got bigger. If it's on four legs and lives in North America, chances are I've shot it, and then some. Deer, moose, fox, coyote, bear, elk... name it. Everything, that is, except rabbit.

The other day I caught the bastard that's been eating off my peach tree, and I promptly drew my carry gun and shot him broadside. The poor little thing made a sound like a baby crying, an utterly heart-wrenching wail that almost had me in tears. I don't know what it was! I swear I'm not trying to sound tough, but I probably haven't cried but twice since I was twelve, and one of those was at a funeral. But that rabbit just got to me.

I mean, holy shit. I'm a veteran. I've killed people. Real men and women, real human beings. Sure they got to me a bit, some of them more than others... but a RABBIT?!

This ordeal has me seriously reconsidering the choices I've made. No joke, I'm questioning some of the biggest decisions of my life over Peter fucking Cottontail eating my peaches. Funny how the littlest thing can change who you are as a person. I know I'll never shoot another rabbit, at the very least. I can't even bring myself to eat the peaches now. Fuck it, the rabbits can have this year's batch.

I've played it over and over... if I'd have shot him in the fucking dome I would have chopped his fuzzy head off and eaten him and that would have been it. Coulda, woulda, shoulda.

Holy shit, I just read this over and realized what a doucher I sound like. Even my girlfriend, the most sensitive gal in the world, thinks I'm a pussy. She won't say it, but I can just... tell, ya know? Man I'm fucked up. Don't lynch me for this....

I worry about a disaster that would be a catastrophic event: nuclear war, zombie apocalypse, whatever. So much so that I have horded MRE's, water, first-aid kits, weapons, etc., Without my wife knowing about it. Then on top of that, I worry that if something happens when I'm not home, or I'm dead or whatever, they would not be aware that there would be food and water readily available to her and my kids in an emergency, but I'm afraid that if I tell her what I have stashed, she will think I'm a nutjob.

I suppose my biggest shame about it is that I'm so afraid that I wouldn't be 'up to it' if the shit really did hit the post-apocalyptic fan. I've had a very easy life, I've never had to worry about where my next meal came from or if I would be able to pay my bills, but I've also never hunted, or fired a weapon outside of a practice range. I've not been in a fight since 5th grade. I'm a good 40 pounds overweight since we had kids and I've become soft as a marshmallow.

No matter how much advance preparation I make as far as food, water and defense, the fact remains that I would be the first one taken down my the gamma-irradiated undead.

heh, just in the basement in one of the extra rooms. 1. When I sit in long meetings at work, I daydream about jumping up doing a ground and pound on my co-workers. I have been in social services for almost twenty years now.

2. The more I train in martial arts, the more oppositional I become to stupid people I work with hoping they will become pissed off enough to try to hurt me so I can beat them down.
